Folgers Coffee was founded in San Francisco in 1850 by James A. Folger, a descendent of a man from Norwich, England, believe it or not! Folger joined a company called The Pioneer Steam Coffee and Spice Mills and helped build their first mill in the city, which then began producing ground coffee ready for the pot, an unheard of thing at the time.
In 1872 James bought the company out and renamed it the J. A. Folger &Co - and the Folger name became an American institution where coffee is concerned.
In 1908 the company built a roasting plant in Kansas City and it remains in existence today.
