Gatorade - Where It Came From
In 1965 the assistant coach of the University of Florida's football team sat down with a team of physicians to try and figure out why so many of his players were affected by the heat.
Those physicians discovered that the loss of fluids and electrolytes through sweat was the cause.
They immediately set about coming up with a solution and formulated scientifically balanced carbohydrate-electrolyte beverage designed to replace both fluids and electrolytes. They dubbed it "Gatorade" - as the University of Florida's football team is called the Florida Gators!
One season later the Gators won the Orange Bowl and orders from other university teams began to come in for Gatorade.
When Gatorade was introduced to the NFL's Kansas City Chiefs in 1969 they went on to win the Super Bowl, beating heavy favourites, the Minnesota Vikings.
More and more teams adopted Gatorade until, in 1983, it became the official sports drink of the NFL!
